Practical AI glossary — terms and common confusions
Model
A learned component used to produce a result.

A drafting model is one part of a letter app; it is not the whole app.

Application
The software experience around components and services.

A letter app adds accounts, storage, and a Send button.

Prompt
Instructions and input supplied for a task.

“Summarize this notice in two bullets” specifies a task and shape, not a truth guarantee.

Token
A unit a model processes; it need not be a whole word.

A tokenizer can split a name into pieces; count using the actual system.

Context
Information available for the current request.

An earlier attachment may be absent even when its filename is visible.

Training
Adjusting a model using examples.

A training log differs from a conversation correction.

Inference
Using a trained model to produce a result.

Drafting another sentence does not by itself prove retraining.

Retrieval
Selecting material to supply to a task.

A retrieved notice still needs a relevance and date check.

Embedding
A numerical representation used to compare or organize items.

A similar search match is a candidate, not proof of the same meaning.

Tool
A function an application can call.

A calendar lookup can be read-only; finding an event is different from creating one.

Agent
Software that can choose and carry out steps toward a goal.

An agent still needs bounded permissions and checked action receipts.

Hallucination
Plausible generated content that is unsupported or false.

An invented opening time needs evidence or removal, even when phrased confidently.

Evaluation
Checking results against stated criteria.

Twenty checked examples establish a bounded result, not universal reliability.

Multimodal
Working with more than one kind of input or output.

A photo plus text does not prove every small label in the photo was read correctly.

Outcome

Produce a versioned handoff with source evidence, approval boundaries, failure handling, and a documented adversarial revision.

Why it matters

Hand a reviewer a complete workflow, challenge its assumptions, and revise it using fresh evidence.

Concept

The final handoff joins research, document work, calculations, and responsible action. Include what is known, what was checked, what is unresolved, who owns the next step, and what must not happen yet. A reviewer should be able to distinguish a recommendation from an executed action without reconstructing your whole conversation.

Challenge the packet before handing it over: a source may be superseded, a required field may be missing, or a confident summary may overstate approval. Also challenge a correct result and explain why it should remain unchanged. After reviewing the fresh cases, revise only what the new evidence warrants and retain a change log.

Worked example

A fictional team has a validated draft and a reviewer approval requirement. An adversarial reviewer asks, “What receipt proves sending is authorized?” If there is no approval, the correct repair is a pending approval handoff. If signed approval for the exact text and recipients exists, retain that bounded authorization; do not manufacture a new obstacle.

Before you check

Using W1–W5, write a four-step workflow from source check to proposed send, with owner, evidence, stop condition, and verification for each step. Complete the artifact’s six sections. Add two adversarial questions, answers with evidence, and a revision after the fresh cases. Do not actually book or send anything.

Practice and fresh transfer

The packets below are fictional and contain the facts needed for these cases. External references are optional background. Judge each response independently: it may be supported, contradicted, or unresolved. Select the passages needed to justify your judgment and write why the distinction matters before revealing feedback.

Cedar workflow handoff workspace

This final planning snapshot combines checked inputs but has not authorized external action. Build a four-step workflow and a concise handoff to Mara using W1–W5. Include task brief, source ledger, proposed output, acceptance/correction log, uncertainty, and review checklist. Ask two adversarial questions about the handoff and answer them from evidence. After transfer, append a version-2 revision note identifying what changed and what remained supported.

Write here or use your own document. Text stays in this page until you leave, reload, or change accounts. Download your copy before leaving. No artifact text is sent to a server or automatically graded; account completion records only self-review.

Supplied fictional packet

  • w1: Research check: 12 of 18 respondents preferred morning; 24 were invited. Nonrespondents’ preferences and actual attendance remain unknown.
  • w2: Venue snapshot: Hall C morning availability on 14 October is confirmed, capacity 20. A booking has not been placed.
  • w3: Budget check: Quoted room/workbook total is $116 at an assumed 18 participants, or $120 at 20. The quoted-item cap is $120. Extra scope needs a new cost check.
  • w4: Mara must approve exact invitation text and recipient list before sending, and approve booking before a reservation. Neither approval exists yet. Drafting and preparation are allowed.
  • w5: Recovery rule: Read failures require source recovery; unknown external-action outcomes require a status lookup by request ID before retry. The handoff must record the last confirmed step and next owner. Carry-forward checks from research: step-free access and final participant availability remain unconfirmed and must be resolved or explicitly handed to Mara before committing the plan.

Purpose, reader, constraints, and the decision or action this packet supports.

For each material claim: source ID, supporting passage or calculation, and scope or date limit.

Write the research brief, decision packet, or workflow handoff requested above.

What did you retain unchanged? What did you repair, why, and using which source?

Unresolved questions, assumptions, consequences, and who should verify them.

Checks completed, remaining approval, reviewer, and next step. Distinguish self-review from independent review.

Review criteria

  • Trace every material claim to the supplied source ID or an explicit calculation.
  • Retain supported content and explain each correction without inventing missing facts.
  • Keep assumptions, uncertainty, and remaining approvals visible.
  • Complete the brief, source ledger, output, corrections, uncertainty, and handoff sections.
  • After the fresh cases, describe how the changed facts would alter your output.
  • A facilitator reviews the actual artifact and unaided explanation before any independent learning claim.

Assess the response

Use Accept when all material claims are supported. Use Revise when a supplied fact or requirement is contradicted. Use Evidence is insufficient when a key fact cannot be established either way. If a response contains both an unknown and a direct contradiction, choose Revise and explain both problems. Conflicting claims with no established authority remain insufficient; a claim does not become a governing fact merely because a source asserts it.

Some responses are fully supported. Others need correction or more evidence. Judge each on its sources; do not edit a correct answer just to change it.

Your written notes stay in this page and disappear when you leave. Only a self-reviewed completion can be saved to your learning account. These practice checks do not establish independent proficiency.

Practice

Case 1

Consider the proposed response for this fictional Cedar work task. Use the supplied packet and stated requirements.

Source packet

Source 1
State: Source and budget checks complete; invitation draft ready; Mara’s send approval pending.
Source 2
Rule: Mara approves exact text and recipients before send.

Response to assess

Hand the draft and recipient list to Mara for approval; report sending as pending.
Your decision
Which sources establish your decision? Select all that are needed.
Choose a supported next step

Practice

Case 2

Consider the proposed response for this fictional Cedar work task. Use the supplied packet and stated requirements.

Source packet

Source 1
Venue record: Morning availability confirmed; no booking placed.
Source 2
Assistant draft: “Hall C is reserved.”

Response to assess

Retain the reservation claim because availability and booking are the same status.
Your decision
Which sources establish your decision? Select all that are needed.
Choose a supported next step

Fresh transfer

Case 3

Consider a fictional transfer handoff after a narrow approval.

Source packet

Source 1
Approval record: Coordinator approved the exact attached reminder to recipients A and B only.
Source 2
Proposed action: Send that unchanged reminder to A and B; no other action is proposed.

Response to assess

This proposed action fits the recorded approval’s content and recipient scope.
Your decision
Which sources establish your decision? Select all that are needed.
Choose a supported next step

Fresh transfer

Case 4

Consider a fictional transfer handoff when a receipt is absent.

Source packet

Source 1
Status excerpt: A reservation request was issued, but the receipt page is missing.
Source 2
Recovery record: No status lookup has yet been made.

Response to assess

The reservation is definitely confirmed.
Your decision
Which sources establish your decision? Select all that are needed.

Save your self-review

Completion records that you reviewed the cases. Your explanation and transfer performance need a facilitator to establish independent learning.

Sign in with your learning-center account to save completion.

Review the explanation for every case and review your capstone artifact before saving.

Summary and next step

Apply the checklist to a new task. Preserve supported content, explain any change with evidence, and name what remains unresolved. Saving records self-review, not independently demonstrated proficiency. A facilitator must assess the explanation and fresh transfer for human learning evidence.
